Recently I have had a fun time making Bennett's baby food. It is so much cheaper, tastier and I can make organic. It is worth the small labor of love to ensure that I am giving him the best food possible. (If only I took so much care in what we eat.) Maybe this is old news to some of you but I never knew that you could make your own. I thought Gerber had some special ingredient that babies had to have. I was first introduced to it by my cousin.(thanks Liz) When I told my Mom I was thinking of doing it she laughed at me. I guess homemade was all I was ever fed. She gave me some of her pointers and now I am a pro!!
At the end of a day of steaming, pureeing and freezing, Jon came into the kitchen. "Home made baby food? What's next clothe diapers?" Then after filling him in on how fun and cheap it was, he is just as excited about it as I am. We are brain storming on what else to make. So far we have made: sweet potatoes, green beans, peas, squash, carrots, pears, apples, peaches and the favorite bananas. Apricots and nectarines are coming soon.
So to answer Jon's question, NO. Clothe diapers are not in our future. My granola streak ends here.
If anyone is interested, here is a websight that I found useful.

Well look at you go. My sister switched to clothe diapers and loves them. I can't bring myself to use them but I have to admit they are pretty cool, alot different then I would've expected... She has a link on her blog page if you want to check it out.
I've made baby food for Zac since he started to eat solids! I love everything about it. I think it has helped with the transition to table food. I used the book “Super Baby Food”. It has so much information. You can borrow it if you want.
I make Chesney's baby food too! I cannot believe how expensive baby food is! It was making me mad when I was spending more money on food for her than for Brad and I.
You are such a better mom than I am. Maybe next time(if there is a next time) you can teach me how to feed my baby better. And save money too!!
That's a stinkin cute picture too. I can't wait to see him again. I'm coming the end of July. I just got work off approved today. Yay!!
You need to get the cookbook "the sneaky chef", it's uses exactly what you just made, but it sneaks them into foods that you would normally eat, it caters more for kid food, but adults will like them equally as much. For example, you make a blueberry puree, and mix them in when you make brownies. It's really awesome.
Looks like you're a pro now! I think that is so good to do and something I would like to do for my kids...in the future!
mmmm. that looks delicous. so i have a blog now, its ugly, but im working on it. just thought i would let you know so we can keep each other updated. your babe is so cute.
Way to go you A+ mom! I am to the point where I am so fed up with spoon feeding. Now I am brainstorming all my healthly finger foods ideas so that Logan can feed himself. This would be good to do for the next one though!
Look at you goin organic. Now maybe you and the check-out lady at Harvest Foods can get along now. lol
way to go markey...i definitely think making your own baby food is the way to go!
I am VERY impressed. I am way too lazy for that. Hey- how about I pay you to make some for my next baby- no- that is not an announcement. I am just thinking ahead!! It actually looks really good- can adults eat it too?!!
Okay, I have to link you to this blog post by my high school friend: http://brookeanddustin.blogspot.com/2008/05/woman-of-cloth.html
perhaps this will change your mind?? too funny. you go girl, bennett is much luckier than dallas.
i was wondering the other day if you ever tried this. a favorite of mine was chicken (left over from the rotisserie costco chicken) w/ rice and asparagus.
it's funny. i'd NEVER eat the gerber food, but i would eat carson's food all of the time while feeding him!
i'm glad it's working for you!
MarKey, this is Aunt Sharon. Grandma and I have been having fun reading all the blogs. Sunny came over to sew, and showed us how to find the blogs. we really admire that you are making the baby food, it is so much better for them. I saw a lady on Oprah it is Seinfields wife, and she has a whole cookbook on how to sneak vegetables and fruit into your childrens diet after they grow up and don't want to eat fruits and veggies anymore. It sounded pretty neat. You might want to check it out in a few years. Aunt Sharon & Grandma
